Woman sold for Rs 1 lakh in New Delhi

A 20-year-old married woman and used to stay in Bangalore with her husband. She came in contact with a human trafficking gang after leaving her home following a minor altercation with her husband on January 1. The gang members allegedly lured her on the pretext of providing a job in Delhi and sold her to a man named Zakir for Rs one lakh, who raped her several times at a house in capital's Ghazipur area, police said on Monday.

The victim, however, managed to escape and approached the Delhi police. Three persons, including two women, have been arrested after a case was registered with Ghazipur police station in East district.

India start visa-on-arrival for Pakistani senior citizens

For the first time since Independence, Pakistanis above the age of 65 will be issued visas on arrival at the Attari-Wagah border joint check post, 30 km from Amritsar. It will be a single entry visa issued for 45 days and Pakistanis issued this visa will not be allowed to visit Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala and other restricted areas.

This visa can be availed twice a year and people issued this visa will not have to report to local police stations, which is mandatory for most Pakistani travellers.
Those who avail the visa on arrival at Wagah will have to return to Pakistan the same way - across the border checkpost on foot. They cannot change their mode of travel by, say, taking the Samjhauti Express train or a bus on their way back.

Four Indian soldiers beheaded in last 13 years

Even as the country is angered by the beheading of an Indian soldier by Pakistani troops on the Line of Control, three similar incidents have taken place in the past 13 years in which four armypersonnel have fallen victim.
Sources in the Army Headquarters in New Delhi said first such incident was reported in 2000 when one soldier was beheaded. The other incident took place in 2011 when two soldiers fell victim to the inhuman act.
The January 8 incident was the third in the last 13 years when Lance Naik Hemraj was beheaded in the Mendhar sector on the Line of Control. Lance Naik Sudhakar Singh was also killed in the incident.

These episodes were deliberately played down, even by the Army brass, evidently under political pressure from the Manmohan Singh government, which was working overtime to restore bilateral relations with Pakistan – and didn’t want the sordid story of Indian soldiers’ martyrdom to disturb the mystical trance of the peacenik brigade.

Battle of Politics in the Army

A drama at the 20 Mandir Marg bungalow, which is allocated to Army chiefs on retirement for six to 12 months , began when Major R Vikram of the 1 Army HQs Signals Unit -- in uniform but later curiously seen without a name-plate -- entered its premises at about 11.45 am.
His elder daughter Mrinalani apparently let Major Vikram inside the house. But when her mother Bharti Singh reached the house soon after, she strongly objected to the Signals' team presence there without ``any prior notice''. She then directed that the two gates of the house be locked to ensure nobody could go out.

Gen Singh's lawyer Vishwajeet Singh, who also subsequently reached the house, said the major was ``found to be fiddling'' with the exchange equipment, removing ``some card'' from the machinery located in a room at the rear of the house.

``The major could not give any reasonable explanation for what he was doing...he had no document/letter authorising him to remove the exchange. It could be anything...he could have come to plant a bug. Recently, they withdrew Gen Singh's security and now this...it could be something big,'' he said.

The former Army chief's family also summoned television channels to witness the unfolding drama. With images being beamed ``live'', the Army HQs promptly swung into action. Delhi Area general-officer-commanding Lt-Gen Subroto Mitra entered the house just after 4 pm to then have a 90-minute ``negotiation'' with Bharti Singh before being allowed to escort the major out.

The Army admitted it had erred in not giving ``prior notice'' for changing the telephone exchange and withdrawing the two operators manning it. ``The Signals team was mandated to do the job. But there was some misunderstanding and miscommunication. We regret that. The matter was amicably resolved by intervention of the Delhi Area GoC. The exchange will be removed later, this time after prior intimation,'' said an officer.

Is it right to call for a revision of the Juvenile Justice Act

Do you think that people are right to call for a revision of the Juvenile Justice Act following this case?

Laws are meant for the people and not that the people are meant for the laws. There is an old adage for that. Certainly, yes, whenever there is defilement, there is an absolute need to review all the laws

Amendment to the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act

The Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act will be amended to treat those over 15 years of age and charged with heinous sexual assault crimes as adults and try them in a regular court of law.

Currently, if an accused person is found to be a juvenile (under 18 years) he is tried by the Juvenile Justice Board and, if convicted, is sent to a juvenile home for a period of three years. An adult would face up to 10 years in prison for rape and up to life in prison for gang rape, though these penalties is being reviewed and may be made harsher.
